Curated in Residence 2025: Looking Back (Part Six): Switzerland the Second

After eight long weeks apart, I was delighted to be on the train back to Switzerland ... Zurich this time, where Kevin would be waiting for me.

Zurich at Night

"The train" was actually four trains:

* one out of the Mont Blanc Valley to Vallorcine

* one from Vallorcine to Martigny

* one from Martigny to Renens

* one from Renens to Zurich

It was an ambitious schedule for an American not used to traveling by train, but it worked perfectly! I arrived at the Zurich train station, and there was Kevin, waiting with open arms.

Finally together in Zurich!

When Kevin and I met, he knew travel was a life priority for me. And since we've been married, we often travel together, but sometimes he can't get away, and I venture out on my own. But we are always glad to reunite ... and what better place than beautiful Zurich?

We stayed in a hotel on a square in the heart of Zurich's Old Town. It was the perfect location! Not far from the train station, not far from the lake, one block off the river, and in the middle of everything.

While in Zurich, we did normal things, like go to the movies to watch The Phoenician Scheme, and we did amazing things, like taking a class at the Läderach chocolate factory. It was like being in Willy Wonka's studio, with fountains of chocolate!

Chef Annette taught us to mold chocolate the Läderach way!

When we weren't boating the length of the lake, we walked our way around the city. Up and down the river, along the lakefront, and through the crooked streets of Old Town.

Honestly, we didn't do much in the way of typical tourist activities in the city, but it was a lovely few days in a beautiful city.

Walking through Zurich's Old Town

From Zurich, we added a country to our "Visited" list: Liechtenstein! It's a tiny little place, and we saw most of it in a couple of hours. And we learned that you can basically rent the entire country for a private event! We were far more basic: we simply enjoyed lunch and a quick visit.

Tiny Liechtenstein is a fun field trip!

We *almost* visited Germany, too, but we stayed on the Swiss side of Rhine Falls. Truly a lovely outing from Zurich -- an easy train ride, a walkable waterfront, and absolutely amazing scenery.

That yellow boat is not very small. But it is dwarfed by the falls!

We took that little yellow boat to the mid-falls island and climbed up.
Truly powerful waterfalls!

But then it was time to leave. Off to Budapest for the real reason this trip was so extended!

Gorgeous view of Zurich from the top of the funicular.

... stay tuned ...
