Packing light. Carry-on only. If you've followed me for any length of time, you probably know that's my travel style.
I'm often asked whether I buy anything along the way. Sure! I love mementos of a trip as much as. the next traveler. But with only a carry-on, the real question is ...
How do I get my souvenirs home? Small-Style Souvenirs are the answer!
Here are my top three:
MAGNETS: Magnets are a wonderful reminder of places you've been. They're usually flat and easily tuck into the edge of a suitcase or backpack. And -- if you're like my recent Scotland travel partner -- you can pack literally dozens into your carry-on bag! When you get home, a simple look at the fridge brings your vacation back to life.

EARRINGS: Ohhhh, this is my go-to souvenir! A pair of earrings easily fits into a carry-on or even in a travel purse. On my recent 10-week trip to Europe, I treated myself to three new pairs of earrings, each designed and created by a local craftsperson. Every time I wear them, I am brought back to the places of their origin.

POST CARDS: Really? Really. Especially post cards featuring prints of original paintings or drawings from local artists. Some people like to mail their post cards home to hang on a bulletin board or to make memory booklets. I like to choose 3 or 4 along the way, then decide which to frame when I get back home. Once framed, I hang them in a special spot in my house, where I will be reminded daily of a wonderful trip! Easy, inexpensive, and charming.

What else would qualify as a small-type souvenir? Key chains, lanyards, baseball caps, knit beanies, t-shirts, and so much more! Think about your space and then buy accordingly.
If you decide to purchase larger souvenirs, say a case of wine or a beautiful vase, consider having it shipped home. Not only will your purchase be insured for shipping, but you will have one less thing to worry about while on the road.
And isn't it nice to receive a gift package after you've returned from your travels?
CONCLUSION: There's no universally right or wrong answer for buying souvenirs on vacation. But with thoughtful planning, you can indeed return home with all the memories and without placing your precious mementos in the cargo hold.
