We all know Paris. Romantic, historic, beautiful. The City of Lights. A city of dreams.
But how about the adorable towns around the French countryside? There are too many to count. And those lists like the "Best 10 Villages in France"? Sure, they're great, usually helpful. But these days, they're often created by AI -- not actual travelers.

I'm here to tell you about places where I've actually been ... those little French villages I've fallen in love with ... starting with Annecy. What's so special about Annecy? Let me count the ways!
| Annecy, y'all: it's simply wonderful! |
ONE: Wonderful Water
The town of Annecy is located on the shore of beautiful Lake Annecy, located in the Haute-Savoie area of France, about 30 miles from Geneva, Switzerland. Known as "the Venice of France," picturesque Old Town of Annecy is known for its beautiful canals.

TWO: Magical Mountains
Located in the French Alps, the views from Annecy are spectacular. And of course, the hiking is excellent, too! For the more adventuresome among us -- i.e. not me! -- paragliding is a popular activity.

THREE: Haute History
Annecy evolved from an ancient Roman settlement to a medieval capital of Geneva to eventually being annexed by France in 1860. Today, its history is celebrated. Old Town was spared during WWII, resulting in today's visitors seeing authentic architecture around every corner.

FOUR: Castles and Palaces
Annecy proper has its own castle, now a popular contemporary art museum. Nearby is the Castle of Monttrotier, an especially perfect day trip when combined with a hike through the Fier River gorge! And no visit to the Annecy region is complete without a peek at Château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard, the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle!

FIVE: Delicious Dining
You knew this was coming, right? The Lake Annecy area is home to more than 20 restaurants from the Michelin Guide, where you're sure to be delighted. Of course, many other restaurants offering delicious local cuisine, including local Reblochon cheese and Savoie wines, are available at all price points while offering a treat for your palate.

IS THAT ALL? Not a chance. But you'll have to venture over to Annecy to see for yourself just how charming this village truly is.

Interested in joining my next trip to Annecy? I'll be there in June 2026, assisting with the cultural aspects and travel logistics of Full Cup Leadership's NEXT: Thriving Through Change retreat. Registration closes November 30, 2025.
FINAL QUESTION: Which other French towns and villages will I be highlighting in upcoming blogs? Stay tuned!
Update: Part Two is Boulogne-Sur-Mer! Read it here.
