My life dream has been to see a puffin. I've been close a few times -- in Wales, off the coast of Maine, on the Isle of Mann, and on the island of Jersey -- but no luck. Wrong season, most of the time. Or too rare, like in Jersey,
Until Tuesday.

That's when I saw multiple puffins in multiple locations! From the puffins on the cliffside in John O'Groats to the puffins in the water of Wick to the puffins nesting directly over my head as I drifted into a sea cave along the North Sea shore.
I knew that if I didn't see puffins on this trip to northern Scotland, my chance of ever seeing one in the wild was pretty slim. But now my dream has come true! And it was every bit as wonderful as I'd ever imagined.

Was it luck? Sure. But it also took a lot of planning, focused research, and intentional action to make sure that I was in a place where luck could work its magic.
The only puffins I'd seen in the wild before this trip, on the island of Jersey. |
Puffins were definitely the highlight of that random Tuesday, but it was simply a magical day all around. Puffins, orcas, cliff walks, castles, sea caves, sea stacks, and literally hundreds of thousands of other nesting birds. Simply magical.
What's next? Stay tuned!
