Vacation Math (it might not add up)

(Dramatization of stories I've heard. None of my clients are represented in this post!)

Potential Client (PC): "My family and I are traveling to Spain. We'd like a luxury room for about $500 to $750 per night."

Travel Advisor (TA): Sure! How many nights are you planning to stay?

PC: "I haven't yet decided ... somewhere between 7 to 10 nights, maybe a little longer."

TA: How many guests in your party, and how many rooms will you need?

PC: "Total 5 travelers. We'd prefer two rooms, 2 in one and 3 in the other."

TA (thinks wow, this is going to be awesome!): Great! Do you have a total trip budget in mind?

PC: Yes! My absolute maximum budget for the entire trip is $2800.

TA: ... 😑 ... 😑 ... 😑 ...

... pssst ...
all those numbers are greater than $2800

Honestly, I've been pretty lucky. My clients (so far) understand basic math. They know that $500 x 7 = $3500 ... and that $3500 is greater than $2800. Right?

And I get it: I usually don't have a set budget in mind for my own trips. I don't know what's out there until I start researching. I don't know the price of hotels, food, activities, and transportation until I actually start the search.

Excellent question!

And can I travel to Europe for a week or more on $2800 for everything? Absolutely. Can and have, likely will do it again. But that's for me traveling alone ... or maybe per person when sharing a room with a friend or family member.

Certainly not for a party of 5. And certainly not on a luxury vacation!

Planning any vacation for 5 guests for a week or more in an international location on a total trip budget of $2800 is a challenge for even the most crafty savings-minded traveler! With that in mind, here are a few considerations when calculating how much you can expect to spend on any trip:

Plus additional trip-specific and person-specific expenses.

Keep in mind your expenses can vary greatly based on location, when you're traveling, and which class of travel you prefer. For instance, an affordable hotel in London in June might cost more than a luxury hotel in Bulgaria in November. And you can almost always be assured that a private tour is going cost more than a comparable large-group trip anywhere.

Here's a trick question: Is an international trip always more expensive than a domestic vacation?

But that's a story for another day!

For now, keep using that calculator app, plan according to your own budget, and your vacation math will work out just fine.
