GAME CHANGER: iPhone Calculator Update

So you're shopping abroad and something is 100 of the local currency, and you're trying to remember what that means in real terms to your bank account. And yes, you can search for the current conversion rate and hope the service wherever you are is good enough.

Or you can install the latest iPhone updates and have that info *from*your*calculator* !!

100 euros to USD

How does this magic work? I don't know, but here are the steps you can take to convert currencies right on your calculator:

Step One: Open your calculator.

The iPhone Calculator

Step Two: Click on the calculator icon. After the new menu opens, toggle over to "Convert."

Step Three: Choose your currencies. For me, U.S. dollars (USD) is the default currently. And in the example above, I selected euros as my conversion currency. Here, I'll select British pounds (GBP).

100 GBP to USD

And voilà!

Notice that 100 GBP costs significantly more USD than 100 euros. Having a better frame of reference for the real cost of your vacation money is important when deciding where to stay, what to do, and how to spend your money on the go.

Converting from USD to GBP or euros works basically the same, and knowing the conversions can be very handy when preparing for a trip. Simply click the little up-down arrow, and voilà:

$100 to GBP (above)

But euros and GBP are fairly easy to keep track of in comparison to USD. Conversions get a bit trickier when dealing with currencies that have a very different system, and that's really when this update is a game changer!

Take Hungarian forints, for instance. At the time this picture was taken, $100 USD was 39,240 forints:

The currency conversions change almost daily -- as of this writing, $100 is 39,131 forints. So say you are in Budapest, where entry to one of the famous thermal baths is marked 7,250 forints. How much are USD are you actually spending? The conversion on the fly can be very challenging! But with this iPhone update, you'll know that the entry price is less than $20.

Sure, but does this work without internet? YES! For the following example, which might be the cost of one traveler's meal in a nice Hungarian restaurant, I turned off both cell service and WiFi, and the converter still works. While the exchange rates won't be updated to the most current conversion, this is a great way to get a good estimate of what something costs in a way that makes sense.

CAVEAT: The calculator's numbers are drawn from the official exchange rates. Your bank or credit card may offer a slightly different exchange rate, and they may charge fees for using their cards outside the U.S. But having this conversation tool available at your fingertips will better help you know whether you are spending $10 or $10,000.

So before the next time you travel, update your iPhone and estimate your currency conversions on the go!
